The purposes of the thesis were: 1) to study the teaching on five powers (Bala) in Theravada Buddhist philosophies, 2) to pursue the teaching on five powers (Bala) in Mahayana Buddhist philosophies, 3) to compare both teachings on five powers in Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist philosophies. Results of the research have found the following findings : The teaching on five powers (Bala) in Theravada Buddhist philosophies deals with strengthening powers conducive to supreme knowledge regarded as the superb, awakening, purifying, investigating, and observing powers for liberating oneself from defilements. The case in point of five powers is the indicator and pointer on being a Noble One’s states and those on their readiness and progress of observing five powers - confidence (Saddha), energy (Viriya), mindfulness (Sati), concentration (Samadhi), and wisdom (Panya). In addition, the observance of five powers is also treated as the stepping stone to observing other types of dharma like fourfold foundations of mindfulness (Satipatthana), foufold efforts (Padhana), fourfold bases of success (Iddhipada), fivefold faculties (Indriya) and noble eightfold paths (Ariyamagga). The teaching on five powers in Mahayana Buddhist philosophies deals with the teaching leading to enlightenment. It supports Bodhisatvas’ observance or the summit of their practice towards Buddhahood, which comprises the teaching on : great wisdom (Mahapanya), great loving-kindness (Mahakaruna) and great policy (Maha-upaya), and appears in undertaking Bodhisatvas’ perfection (Parami) and observance. Its main teaching is comprised of morality (Bila), concentration (Samadhi) and wisdom (Panya). Rigidly, Bodhisatvas’ observance puts the emphasis on assisting others in distress in order to make them survive from hardship of countless concerns. Their unique observance in Mahayana Buddhist philosophies initially lies in their absolute decisions on the great four accomplishments, that is, (1) eradicating all defilements, (2) paying utmost attention to studying the entire dharma, (3) assisting all beings, and (4) training oneself to achieve enlightenment. The comparative results of teachings on five powers in Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist philosophies have proven similar. Such teachings in both philosophies are placed as the fundamental base for the rule of mental practice towards direct liberation. Five powers in Theravada Buddhist philosophies are : (1) confidence, faith; (2) energy, endeavour; 3) mindfulness, consciousness; 4) concentration, firm intention; (5) wisdom, thorough knowledge. Five powers in Mahayana Buddhist philosophies refer to the teaching that supports Bodhisatvas’ observance or makes contribution to anyone wishing to become a Buddha, to attain enlightenment, that is, the insight of four noble truths – sufferings, causes of suffering, cessation of sufferings, and ways leading to cessation of sufferings. Five powers are counted as powerful device to be considerably used in Buddhism but they refer to the excellence in one’s observance of dharma in one step. Additionally, the meaning of five powers embraces the most excellence in practice of dharma in Buddhism, that is, the extinction of defilements. Mahayana Buddhism’s teaching characterizes five powers in term of undertaking perfection (Parami) to a lesser extent, for its only objective is liberation to lead all beings to the highest goal, that is, Nirvana. On a contrary, five powers in Theravada Buddhist philosophies prefer conservative, strict traditions more than Mahayana Buddhist ones, of which the latter’s philosophy tries to interpret the Buddha’s teachings by logical reasoning and change some customs and traditions by doing away with some teachings and adding other ones as deemed appropriate. In other words, Mahayana Buddhist philosophies are not strict with codes of conduct as stipulated by the Buddha.
